Education Seminar - Hepatitis B Update

Objectives

Upon completion of the education event, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the priority populations for hepatitis B testing in Australia
  • Accurately identify which tests are to be ordered to make a diagnosis of hepatitis B
  • Interpret serology to determine if a patient is susceptible, vaccinated, previously exposed or has acute or chronic hepatitis B infection
  • Determine which phase of disease a patient is in and how this effects their management
  • Explain the need for regular lifelong monitoring of patients with chronic hepatitis and identify who requires treatment

About the speaker

Dr David Baker has worked in Darlinghurst for over twenty years. He has a special interest in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine as well as Addiction Medicine and Hepatitis C. David has completed additional training at University of Sydney – the Diploma in Medicine (Sexual Health).

David is actively involved in medical student training as a senior lecturer (adjunct) at the University of Notre Dame. He also works as a medical adviser to the Australasian Society of HIV Medicine and is a member of many local and national advisory committees in the areas of HIV and hepatitis.

David coordinates a number of research projects at East Sydney Doctors and presents research finding at local and international meetings. He is actively involved in improving health care to marginalised groups including homeless people and people who inject drugs. He is also interested in the treatment of skin conditions and has undertaken training with the Royal Australasian College of Dermatology in surgical procedures. He is experienced in the use of Sculptra injections for facial wasting.
